For His Leadership in Tackling the Climate Crisis
Clean air, water, and a livable climate are inalienable human rights. And solving this crisis is not a question of politics, it is a question of our own survival.
Leonardo DiCaprio, award-winning actor and a four-time Academy Award® nominee, is a leading advocate for environmental protection.
In 1998, DiCaprio established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, dedicated to promoting the long-term health and well-being of all Earth’s inhabitants. Since inception, the foundation has provided over $30 million in direct grants to 70 innovative projects across 40 countries, including ocean conservation, supporting vulnerable wildlife species, restoring balance to threatened ecosystems, empowering local communities and protecting the planet’s fragile climate.
Currently, less than 3% of total global philanthropic activity is dedicated to environmental causes. DiCaprio’s mission is to improve the level of support for this critical work. He is on the board of several pre-eminent environmental protection organizations, such as the World Wildlife Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and Pristine Seas and Oceans. He is also an adviser to The Solutions Project, an organization dedicated to the adoption of renewable energy.
DiCaprio has been honoured for his philanthropic work, including receiving the Clinton Global Citizen Award. In 2014 he was designated by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as a Messenger of Peace with a special focus on climate change.
